I mwpglobi piliferi sono sempre ben sviluppati,cite-ref-handbuch-10-3[10] mentre le mwqwmandibole sono vestigiali, benché pronunciate. I mwvwpalpi mascellari sono di regola allungati e costituiti da tre-cinque articoli. Nelle mwwafemmine di mwwqTegeticula e mwwwParategeticula si osserva una sorta di "tentacolo mascellare", estensibile e rivestito di corte setole, la cui funzione risulta essere quella di afferrare e compattare il mwxqpolline dai fiori di mwxgmwxwYucca, fino ad ottenerne una sferula; negli esemplari in cui questo tentacolo è poco sviluppato, la raccolta di polline non avviene. Torace
Le mw2wali sono lanceolate (la lunghezza è circa il triplo della larghezza), con colorazione variabile dal biancastro traslucido al marroncino, ma comunque quasi mai iridescenti, e talvolta con macchie e geometrie varie. Il mw3atornus non è individuabile. Nell'mwatwapparato genitale maschile, si osservano i pectinifer sulle valve di molte specie, con sviluppo e struttura variabili, talvolta ridotti a semplici spine, o totalmente assenti.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-12[3]cite-ref-handbuch-10-11[10] L'mwauuuncus si trova fuso assieme al mwauytegumen con varie soluzioni, tra cui uno o due lobi terminali. Il tegumen appare costituito da una stretta fascia dorsale, mentre il mwaucvinculum è solitamente ben sviluppato, a forma di "V" o di "Y". La mwaugjuxta si mostra sotto forma di uno mwauksclerite sagittato ben definito. L'mwauoedeago è costituito da una struttura tubulare alquanto allungata, facilmente distinguibile.cite-ref-handbuch-10-12[10]

Le mwaxkuova, sono inserite singolarmente nei tessuti della mwaxopianta ospite, e possono pertanto assumere la forma della "tasca" che le ospita. Zampe e pseudozampe
Le mwabszampe possono essere presenti oppure sostituite da calli ambulacrali, come in mwabwmwab0Prodoxus; il mwab4pretarso rivela spesso una robusta seta squamiforme disposta sulla base laterale dell'mwab8unghia; le mwacapseudozampe sono assenti o vestigiali, con uncini di solito assenti, almeno nei primi stadi di sviluppo, ma talvolta presenti sui segmenti mwaceaddominali da III a VI, e disposti su doppie file come in mwaciGreya. Pupa
Nel mwae4capo, il mwae8vertice è spesso dotato di un rostro frontale molto evidente, che tuttavia è assente nelle specie di mwafaGreya. Le mwafiali si estendono fin sul V-VII segmento mwafmaddominale e di regola i segmenti addominali da II a VII sono mobili in ambo i sessi.cite-ref-mosher-1916-24-1[24] Sui segmenti addominali da II a VIII è inoltre osservabile una singola fila di spine tergali. Il mwafgcremaster è di solito rappresentato da una coppia di robuste spine, o tubercoli dorsali, disposte sul decimo segmento addominale, in alcune specie accompagnate da altre due spine in posizione ventrale.cite-ref-handbuch-10-20[10]
Biologia
Ciclo biologico
Non sono disponibili molte informazioni riguardo alla mwagabiologia dell'mwageuovo delle Prodoxinae: in mwagiGreya subalpa, ad esempio, la maggior parte delle uova vengono deposte nel terzo mediano dello mwagqschizocarpo della mwagupianta ospite.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-19[3]
La mwagslarva è spesso mwagwminatrice ma, come nei mwag0Cecidosidae, non costruisce un fodero. A seconda della specie in questione, può attaccare le mwag4gemme, le mwag8foglie, i mwaharicettacoli fiorali, i mwahefrutti o anche i mwahisemi della mwahmpianta nutrice.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-20[3]cite-ref-handbuch-10-21[10]
Di regola le specie sono mwah0univoltine, con la larva che rappresenta lo stadio svernante.cite-ref-handbuch-10-22[10] Particolarmente interessante è il caso di alcune mwaiispecie, come mwaimProdoxus y-inversus, nelle quali in corrispondenza di forti ritardi nella fase di fioritura della pianta ospite, l'ultima età della larva può entrare in una prolungata mwaiudiapausa, che in taluni casi può persino superare i vent'anni.cite-ref-powell989-25-0[25]cite-ref-powell-1992-26-0[26]
Nelle Prodoxinae le larve possono essere apode oppure provviste di zampe, pseudozampe e uncini; queste larve attaccano tipicamente i semi o il fusto delle mwai8Agavaceae, con la sola eccezione del genere mwajaGreya che rivela un comportamento più affine a quello delle mwajiLamproniinae, andando ad attaccare nei primi stadi di sviluppo i semi di mwajmSaxifragaceae o di mwajqApiaceae, per poi emergere in un secondo tempo e svernare nel terreno; il bruco completa infine la maturazione alimentandosi, durante la primavera successiva, alle spese delle gemme fiorali o delle foglie della pianta ospite.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-21[3]cite-ref-handbuch-10-23[10]cite-ref-davis-pellmyr-thompson-1992-22-1[22] In mwakeTegeticula e mwakmParategeticula si è osservato invece l'affinamento di un peculiare mwakumutualismo tra le femmine e la loro pianta nutrice: lo sviluppo dei semi utilizzati in seguito dalle larve come cibo, viene garantito dalle femmine stesse, che provvedono all'mwakyimpollinazione della pianta, pur senza ricavarne del mwakcnettare, durante le fasi di mwakgovoposizione; a tale scopo, la maggior parte delle femmine ha sviluppato, caso unico tra gli mwakkinsetti, un particolare tipo di mwakotentacoli mascellari in grado di raccogliere il mwakspolline dalle mwakwantere dei fiori delle Agavaceae, per poi ammassarlo in forme compatte al di sotto del mwak0capo, ed infine andarlo forzatamente ad inserire all'interno del tubulo mwak4stigmatico, provvedendo così alla mwak8fecondazione del fiore.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-22[3]cite-ref-handbuch-10-24[10]cite-ref-davis-1967-11-2[11]cite-ref-riley-1892-21-1[21]cite-ref-davis-pellmyr-thompson-1992-22-2[22]cite-ref-powell-1992-26-1[26]cite-ref-powell-and-mackie-1966-27-0[27]cite-ref-powell-1984-28-0[28]cite-ref-miles-1983-29-0[29]cite-ref-addicott-et-al-1990-30-0[30] Va infine segnalato che in mwangProdoxus phylloryctus la larva mina le foglie semisucculente di mwanomwansYucca baccata.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-23[3]cite-ref-w-p988-20-1[20]. La mwa-0sottofamiglia è a distribuzione esclusivamente mwa-4olartica, con una maggiore mwa-8biodiversità nell'mwbaaecozona neartica, ma nessun mwbaegenere risulta presente in mwbaiEuropa.cite-ref-scoble-1995-3-26[3]cite-ref-handbuch-10-27[10]
Tassonomia
Fino agli mwbboanni settanta / mwbbsottanta del secolo scorso, col termine Prodoxinae si intendeva una mwbbwsottofamiglia delle mwbb0Incurvariidae, o alternativamente delle mwbb4Adelidae, che comprendeva tutte le mwbb8specie oggi incluse nella mwbcafamiglia mwbceProdoxidae.cite-ref-davis-1967-11-3[11]cite-ref-fauna-italia-36-0[36]
Va peraltro chiarito che allo stato attuale non c'è accordo tra gli studiosi riguardo alla composizione effettiva di questo taxon: il mwbcsgenere mwbcwmwbc0Agavenema, che secondo alcuni Autoricite-ref-adw-37-0[37] andrebbe inserito nelle Prodoxinae,cite-ref-lepindex-38-0[38] secondo altri sarebbe da considerarsi soltanto un mwbdysinonimo oppure un mwbdcsottogenere di mwbdgmwbdkProdoxus.cite-ref-frack-1982-31-1[31]
